Our business demands a long-term perspective. In the world of Life insurance, a century can pass between the day we issue a policy and the day we fulfill its promise.
When we issued our first policy, no one had ever heard of a World War, a television, or antibiotics. Deadly diseases were common -- diphtheria, tuberculosis, and pneumonia. But auto accidents were almost unknown. We cannot predict what new wonders or fears the future will bring, but we can dedicate ourselves to helping customers weather those storms.
As society changes, so do the benefits we offer our customers.
Our Life insurance policies can replace income for widowed spouses and their children; they provide funds that can save family homes, farms, and businesses from foreclosure; and they provide peace of mind to our customers who know that their own premature deaths need not deprive their loved ones of the dreams they have worked so hard to achieve.
Over the years, our policies have seen many changes. Farmers Life was one of the first companies to offer lower rates for non-smoking customers. As medical science lengthened lifespans and increased the cost of medicine, the maturity age of permanent Life insurance policies rose from 90 years, to 100 years, to 121 years, helping our customers avoid the worry of outliving their policies. To cope with medical expenses from critical and prolonged illnesses, we have added riders allowing policy owners to receive benefits while the insured is still alive, and to waive premium payments if the owner becomes disabled.
As life expectancies continue to rise, many Americans fear outliving their savings. Backed by the company’s Excellent financial strength rating from A. M. Best, our Annuities can help customers build as well as protect their assets. In retirement, annuities can provide a guaranteed lifetime income benefit. These policies, too, have evolved and will continue to evolve, responding to the changing needs of the customers we serve.

We are committed to developing new ways of doing business that help eliminate waste and increase recycling and energy conservation. We recognize the importance of maintaining and improving the world we live in, and hope to encourage others to protect our earth for the next generation. Thanks to our new Electronic Life Application Process, Life insurance applications can be reviewed, signed, and approved without printing a single piece of paper! That's progress that matters.
Our employees and agents are also committed to improving the human environment, supporting the progress of the communities where we live and do business. Our more than 15,000 Farmers agents are all small business owners, active in their communities. When we started supporting the March of Dimes more than fifty years ago, its mission was to combat polio, then the only epidemic disease on the rise in America. We continue to support the March of Dimes today, long after the victory over polio in the U.S. Every year on Be a Hero for Babies Day, our agents and employees raise millions of dollars to support prenatal and neonatal health.
Whether it's our environmental awareness, our half-century of support for the March of Dimes, or our agents' support for the survivors of natural disasters, we remain dedicated to making a better world for generations to come.
